Why I Want to Be an IBCLC
What made you want to become an IBCLC?
My journey to becoming an IBCLC was ignited by my experiences as a passionate black Doula, where I've closely witnessed the systemic disparities affecting black women in the medical field. I've seen how easily the voices of black mothers are overlooked, especially in matters as crucial as breastfeeding. Observing hospitals administering formula without consent and the assumptions made by healthcare professionals about black mothers' desire to breastfeed deeply affected me. As a mother who breastfed my own child until he was two, I understand the immense benefits of breastfeeding. These experiences fueled my desire to become an IBCLC, to advocate for and empower black mothers, ensuring their choices are respected and their voices heard
What impact do you hope to make as an IBCLC?
As an IBCLC, I aim to bridge the gap between black mothers and the healthcare system, ensuring they receive the support and respect they deserve. My goal is to create a nurturing environment where black mothers feel empowered to make informed decisions about breastfeeding. I hope to use my platform to educate healthcare professionals on cultural competence, reducing biases and misconceptions. Ultimately, I aspire to increase breastfeeding rates among black women, contributing to healthier outcomes for both mothers and their babies.
